Two Long Beach nonprofits partner to open new low-cost spay/neuter veterinary clinic

By Kate Karp

Since 2013 Fix Long Beach has been serving area residents with free or low-cost spay/neuter for their pets, vaccinations at a minimal charge and free microchips. Since the all-volunteer organization opened its figurative doors, it’s held mobile clinics in different Long Beach parks and has spayed and neutered over 12,000 cats and dogs and vaccinated and microchipped countless others.

Last summer, Fix Long Beach lead Diana Kliche and Sherri Stankewitz, founder of dog rescue Sparky and the Gang, partnered up and set doggedly to work to open a clinic that had literal doors. With the assistance of a generous grant from Friends of Long Beach Animals to refurbish the building, the two nonprofits took over The Family Vet, a clinic in Central Long Beach, whose owner and lead veterinarian was going into semiretirement. The Family Vet had previously performed a large number of spay/neuter procedures for Long Beach Animal Care Services, so it was all set up for an organization that concentrated its efforts on fixing pets at low cost.

Lost dog finds new home, the story of Rex

ADOPTION UPDATE! We are happy to report that this sweet dog (Now “Rex”) that was found in Lakewood on July 26th has now been adopted! Thank you to Dr. O’Neill from Bixby Animal Clinic  for giving this lost pup a new forever home! ‍💛😍

Rex was found wandering around Carson street in Lakewood in July.   The entire community, and FOLBA came together to try and find this un-microchipped and un-collared pet’s owner.

After a few weeks with no replies to our reuniting campaign, all those that cared for this dog changed tactics to help him find a new home and what better home could he get than living with a veterinarian!  Best wishes to Rex and his new family!

Charlie has a new home!

We love sharing adoption success stories! Remember Oliver, the found kitten who lost his mamma in a car accident?

Oliver (now Charlie) is now chillin’ in his new home with a big brother cat and is enjoying his new life. Thanks for adopting this once homeless kitten Andrea!

New Home for Sweet Ginger

Sweet Ginger has snuggled her way into her new home. Our Bixby adoptions are finding super quality homes for the kitties.

Ginger was lucky to graduate from a small cage at ACS, where she languished since February, to a kitty-condo at Bixby Animal Clinic, and now she has a 3 bedroom house to herself in Bixby Knolls. Ginger’s new family are overjoyed with their new cat! Since, she is the only cat, she will be royally spoiled. She already has a large cat tree to hang out in, as exciting as a new treehouse to a child. We can all celebrate Ginger’s newfound happiness!
